Fring is exciting, at least i was excited about it. Essentially it’s a VOIP for your Smart phone. You have all the bells and whistles of Instant Messaging too but it’s main daddy is that it hooks up with Skype.
It has the makings for great things but i have to say when i tried it the quality was poor (i’m with Vodafone) and even though i was in full 3G coverage it had that choppy CB-radioesque feel to it and of course your paying for your data AND the skype credit if ringing Skype-Out. Although i see it now supports Google Talk which is pretty nifty!
I uninstalled it but would come back to it if 3G coverage was enhanced or the data connection was cheaper / free.
Although Fring is around a while, Irish Company Blueface are now running with it. If using it do play around with the settings, when i originally installed it would preload when my phone started which made functionality slow and of course it auto-connected to the services Skype etc.

It maybe the case that Vodafone were shaping your Voip traffic hence the bad quality, they might do this to prevent you circumventing international call charges for instance. I believe 3 networks do something like this.
